Hi all:
I've been subscribed for awhile now, just never posted
before. I think I'm doing it properly. Let me know if I'm
not.
My first car, at 16, was a '65 Beetle and I have had at
least 1 air cooled VW in the yard ever since. I am now 50
and working on my first Type 3. YeeeeeeHaaaawwwww
I bought a '64/'69 butchered Squareback. The pan and most
of the body is '69. Front fender's and gas tank as well as
the interior are '64.
Anybody know what the body alone weighs? Wanting to know
if my 2000 lb. capacity engine hoist will lift it off the
pan. It is stripped, no doors/trunk lid/gas tank/rear
hatch/glass/fenders or interior panels.
All hints/tips or leads to parts or websites of interest
will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for looking >>
Welcome aboard. The entire car completely together weighs about 2200 lbs,
like Dave mentioned. Once you've got the glass, the doors, the fenders, and the
trunk lid, the rear hatch off, you've dropped quite a bit less than the shell
would be with everything on. If I had to make a guess, I'd say the bare shell
weighs about 6 to 700 lbs. I've pulled the body off the pan with the glass and
doors still on using the reinforced rafters in my garge (set up as a 3 point
lift). Using an engine lifter to pull the body off may give you some trouble
trying to clear the feet / legs. If you can get a helper for 1/2 an hour, it'll
go a lot easier. : ) It is very doable though. Good luck with your project,
and welcome again to the list.
