<x-flowed>To me, "a popping sound like popcorn" is the sound of pulled head studs.
I am for sure looking for a second opinion on what my mechanic said as I do think that he's not really interested in
working on my car, and isnt the most efficient to begin with. I do know he described a popping sound like popcorn
that was another descriptor of what my problem is- and an indicator of why I needed to look for a new engine. I think
Steven and maybe Bob said is not a good sign of engine health and something I shouldnt be driving on as it is.....
However in regards to fuel economy- I drive about 20 miles to work each way, and on the way home can sit in
sometime very heavy traffic. I had a 74 super prior to this and was driving close to the same distance and didnt go
through nearly as much fuel as I am now, hence my suspicion that there's something wrong with that dept. (could be
totally unrelated to the other issues). But since my odometer doesnt work anymore its hard for me to really gauge
what my exact mileage is per tank. My quick calculation puts me somewhere around 10mgs, which is like hummer
mileage.

I think you need a couple of things. First, I would get a better description from your mechanic as to what he thinks the problem actually is. This info is really just too vague to work with, and it is possible that he just sent you away with this because he doesn't know what the problem really is and he doesn't want to deal with your car anymore.
Second, you should post your location in the hope that someone on this list who is local to you could contact you and maybe give you a more informed opinion. At any rate, you need a good second opinion.
Just WHAT is your gas mileage? There are several simple causes for bad gas mileage, so putting some numbers to this would help.
