<x-flowed>I don't think its a battery problem, as the car fully functions prior to the starter button being pushed. Lights work, stereo works, no issues at all, nothing to indicate a battery malfunction or insufficient charge or internal short.
As to the others, I'm going to check the starter solenoid tomorrow to see if it is functioning properly. If that works ok, I'll check the starter itself, then start looking at wiring.
When you remove the battery wire to "reset" this problem, is there a fair sized spark?
If there is, then it sounds like a problem in the starter solenoid. In this case, I would expect that you must have wires that are melting until you can disconnect things.
If there is no spark, then I suspect that you have a bad connection (not a short) somewhere in the battery circuit. Check both ends of the ground wire and both ends of the positive wire.
It's also possible that this is a battery problem which could only be fixed by replacing the battery.
