Re: [T3] Need help with engine problem diagnosis
<x-flowed>NormanR=> a noise that sounded like flapping loose sheet metal. ...
=> like something rattling around in the engine case ...
=> Thinking it could be backfiring ...
=> very intermittent at idle ... happens frequently under load.
=> Could it be a short arcing?
The various possible sources you have listed all sound quite different,
so it is not easy to focus in from your description. I guarantee it is
not a loose rod or busted bearing, that would be unmistakeable. A piece
of metal in the sump would not fly around in the case, it would just
fall to the bottom
Use the long-screwdriver-in-your-ear trick to locate the source of the
noise. Postignition (what most people refer to as backfiring) will be
loudest at the exhaust manifolds. A loose screw in the fan will show up
at the fan housing.
