There are no completely straightforward engine swaps possible, but a type 4 engine can be made to fit with some effort. There are lots of people who have done this, but it's not easy and it's not cheap. Corvair engines turn the wrong way. It's possible to rebuild the differential and flip the ring gear to the other side, but there used to be a special cam you could buy that would reverse the direction of the Corvair engine. That cam might no longer be available. There are lots of ways to get more out of the type 3 engine. For clues to good ways to approach this, this book is a VERY good place to start: How to Hotrod Volkswagen Engines by Bill Fisher published by H. P. Books, Tucson, AZ, 1970 ISBN 0-912656-03-4 (excellent book, well written and researched) I think this is still in print, but used copies show up on ebay regularly. And, yes: Speed costs money.
