I had it happen to me, on the autobahn, going about 70 miles an hour  
in a 1965 Bug. Sudden loss of power, a little bit of backfiring, and  
then I couldn't go faster than maybe 45 miles. Back at the shop I  
noticed that the accelerator nozzle was gone, never to be found  
again. Every movement of the gas pedal would squirt huge amounts of  
gas into the carb throat. After putting in a used one from another  
carb everything was fine again.
