Solenoid click but then whirr for 5 3 seconds from the fuel pump as it pressures the system. If you don't her that then se to it that all the sensors (head temp, oil pressure, air, fuel pressure etc are there and working. See that all the old fuel lines are there and that they are not type II stuff. A 30 year old harness may be full of rotten wire and intermittent contacts. The insulation, subjected to prolonged heat would stiffen then crack then allow the wire to rot. What do you expect for a thirty old bit of wire anyhow? All that has to be there or the computer will not let the rest work. YOu can pull the edge connector from it then go it over with the voltmeter, being sure thet the contact works when wiggled. Old mechanics, who didn't screw with electrical stuff except to replace it all, will first change the computer (get the right one) then wiggle the wires. You need to find new ends for the wiring harness every place it touches the engine then make good the wire there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
