This brings up an interesting thing that I noticed when I started to
investigate my tranny problem. The pilot bearing was very dry and the tip

is most confusing in my situation is that I was able to shift into all gears
without pushing in the clutch. k
If there is rust on the tranny shaft, that should be polished down first with
some fine silicon carbide paper. The pilot bearing should be lubricated any
time the engine is out.
Could you shift into all gears with the engine running? I can't imagine what
would allow that to happen.
What would be the result of having a pilot bearing fail?
It can either disintegrate and leave the tranny shaft unsupported, which would
probably let things run off center and out-of-balance, or it could bind up and
keep driving the tranny even when the clutch pedal is depressed.
