On '74's (obviously not T3's but all other cars sold in the US) it
served as part of an interlock system. If there was weight in the seat,
and the belt wasn't buckled, the car wouldn't start.

People in 1974 weren't ready for this (seatbelts had only been mandated
a few years earlier, and it wouldn't be until the '80s that mandatory
seatbelt laws would come into place.). Most people ended up just
buckling the seatbelt and sitting on it, or getting their mechanic to
jumper the contact switch in the belt buckle. It was a failure.
