Re: [T3] 71 Fastback, now in refit
<x-flowed>SteveJ=> what the heck is that canister?
It's part of the fuel system left over from the FI. It'll have no
function in your new system; even its original functionality is dubious.
However, if it's in really good condition, someone here may want it.
=> do I need this electric fuel pump, or am I better off with the
mechanical one?
If it's an FI VW fuel pump, you won't be able to use it as the pressure
will be too much for the carbs. (Sell it, it's worth money.) If it's
aftermarket and puts out carb pressure (usually under 10psi), it may be
useful, but most of them are noisy crap.
The mechanical pumps come in two flavors that look exactly the same,
Type 1 and dual-carb Type 3, distinguishable by the part number (111 or
311 prefix). The Type 3 pumps put out about a third more pressure, 5psi
new. You'll have to check your carb manual to determine how much
pressure you'll need. If it's more than 5, you'll want to go shopping
for an appropriate pump/regulator combo.
