New TO bearings come with a plastic coating on the fact that goes against the pressure plate. For the longest life, it's best to gently roughen that surface with some sandpaper, clean off any resulting grit, and rub a thin coating of MoS2 paste into the roughness. I don't think this is absolutely necessary, but it seems to reduce noise and minimize wear. I also use the MoS2 paste on the drive splines. The alignment too is essential to getting things together, but once together it has no further effect. IOW, without the alignment tool you may have trouble getting the engine in, but once you're in, it doesn't matter any more. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
