It's also possible that your gas tank has lost its vent for some 
reason. If this happens the tank could come under vacuum and vapor 
lock could result from trying to pull gas from the tank while the 
tank was trying to pull it back. As a test, next time you have this 
problem you could open your gas cap and see if you get an ingoing 
"whoosh", followed by easier starting.
