Check the pressure sensor hose to make sure it is attached at both ends.

Check the car's system voltage. It should be at least close to 14V at med rpm
after the car has been driven a bit to warm it up.

Check the distributor advance mechanism, as these often get stuck. Grab the
rotor and twist it CW. The tip should move about 1/2" and then hit a stop. When
you let go of it, it should snap back smartly.

It might also be useful to check the fuel pressure while driving. This can be
done with an ordinary pressure gauge and a long piece of 5/16" hose run in thru
the rear side window. Make sure it can't droop down and get caught in the tire.
The fuel pressure should be ~28 psi, and the important thing is that it should
never change no matter what you're doing with the car, as long as the engine is
running.

That advice was poor. You're exactly right, replacing "everything" is VERY
expensive, and it's actually not likely to fix the problem. The advice you're
likely to get here is much better informed about Type 3s, and with some effort
on your part, you're likely to find a cheap solution.

Have you replaced the spark plugs?

Do you have the Bentley manual? That's the best one for this car.

Let us know what you find and keep asking questions. It might be useful to tell
us where you're located; there may be someone here who lives nearby.
