The sending unit is interchangeable between the two voltages, but the gas gauge itself is voltage specific. You can install the later 12volt gauge into the 6 volt pod, as it's only held on by 2 screws. You do however have to remove the pod from the dash to access the back of it. I just replaced the entire pod with one from a later car when I did my conversion. I hope this helps.
