From your note I wasn't able to discern what problem you hope to address. Your timing was overadvanced, you changed it, the pinging went away -- problem solved, as far as I can see.

You did mention that you felt a loss of pep. Advanced timing (up to a point) does indeed raise short-term performance, but at the cost of engine life. You might raise short-term performance at med school by taking speed, with the same sort of tradeoff.
