[T3] Governor shaft

All this talk about the governor drive got me to worrying about what we do
about this in the long run. A couple of possibitities come to mind:

1) The Bentley mentions that replacement shafts are available for replacement,
and indeed, when I look at the parts list I find 003 325 305 listed as the
governor shaft, which includes the main shaft, sleeve, and square drive pin. It
seems likely that this part could still be purchased from VW since the 003 AT
was used in later cars also. Unfortunately this is not a long term solution,
since it just seems like this part was under engineered.

2) I wonder if the sleeve and square drive pin are actually separate parts. If
they are, then it might be easy to substitute something slightly different that
would not come loose. The shaft assy. just unbolts from the bottom of the
governor itself; does the hole thru the shaft go all the way thru? If so, then
a square piece with a bit of a head could be dropped in from the top, and this
would never slip out. Alternatively, we might be able to make slightly longer
pins that were relieved (undercut) where the outer shaft is crimped down on it.
This would be equivalent to a small head.

Questions for Russ and Daniel:

Are the sleeve and square pin actually separate parts?

Is the square pin hardened?

Is the outer shaft bored thru to the top?
