There was some discussion on the Internet years ago that GL-5 would hurt the 
brass parts in the VW transmission.  I believe since then GL-5 has been 
modified so that current formulations no longer have this concern.  This is 
the "GL-5 MT-1" rating.

In regards to that topic, I have read in the past that the "original" GL-5 
really only has problems if the fluid was heated to a certain point, I 
believe 250F, which is well above the normal operating temperatures of a VW 
manual transmission.
