Re: Pan gasket (was:Re: Governor o-ring (was:Re: [T3] Passed test - good and bad news))

<x-flowed>>> Anyway, the pan had quite a lot of dark sludge in it, and what looked
like a
small amount of metallic filings. Thankfully there were no big lumps of
burnt brake band or whatever.

No I don't. It looked like a layer of dark sludge, with a few tiny silver coloured shavings floating in it.

I'm not sure that I can see the tear in the strainer.

It looked torn to me, but I didn't take it out and take a closer look. In the photo the tear is at the edge nearest the camera, where there is a dark stain on the strainer.

BTW, don't be afraid to touch things, just touch them with clean fingers. I get
the impression that the things to be concerned about are grit and lint.

Those are precisely what I don't want to get into it, and why I touched it the least I could. I almost always use paper towels to clean things, and this seems to be a no-no for the tranny, even though I used them to clean the pan (I couldn't really see how it could do any harm). What kind of cloth is completely lint-free? Also, lying on the floor under the car it is quite difficult to be sure that no grit from the floor will get inside. That's also why I put the pan back on as soon as I knew I wasn't go to get any further today.
