Re: Governor o-ring (was:Re: [T3] Passed test - good and bad news)
<x-flowed>>> I took off the governor cover and the o-ring appears to be MISSING.
The seal is just a plain o-ring and it should be in a groove cut in the
transmission housing. The cover actually slips inside it, so that the seal
occurs agains the outside surface of the cover, about 5mm back of the
leading
edge of the cover. . . .
Well, it took me a while to work out what was going on in there, but the old
o-ring WAS there, in a place which made it totally invisible whatever kind
of bright-light, flash photography or any other method that I used.
In the end I was able to remove it using a very sharp knife and a kind of
right-angled pointed probe that I once bought but have never used for
anything before.
The old o-ring was intact, but flat. The new one seals better, I'm sure.
While I was at it I changed the o-ring in the filler. The filler tube was
coming loose at the top screw and this could conceivably have been the cause
of the leak, if the filer had moved slightly to one side. I've had a big
leak there once before.
The thread at the top was stripped but I was able to get a longer screw to
tighten up OK. Also the old o-ring was flat rather than round. It made a big
mess when I removed it - I must remember that for next time.
I didn't have time to do any more. The next thing is the pan gasket.
BTW, the tranny takes 3 liters of ATF to completely fill it, right?
