I've been wrestling with my AAR for some time now. When I got the car, it was stuck mostly closed. Now I've got it stuck mostly open. Disassembling it was easy, and I found the "rotor" is practically an interference fit in the housing. I orginally couldn't turn it even using a screwdriver in the slot at the bottom. A thorough cleaning seemed to free it up a bit, and using my freezer and a heat gun, I managed to get it to cycle from fully open to fully closed (couldn't even blow through it, so it really closes completely). However, installed on the car, it never really closes much, and it idles hot at about 1500rpm. Putting my thumb over the inlet slows the speed down to under 1000rpm. Once or twice, it's closed enough on its own for the idle to slow to a reasonable level. For the most part, though, it never really closes enough. When it does close after heating with a heat gun, it "snaps" closed at some point rather than slowly closing evenly. The action of the rotor is still very stiff, and I suspect it's simply too much for the bimetal spring to overcome unless it's heated up well past the usual oil temp (heat gun I'm using is probably raising the temp to 300dF). I've tried oiling it using heavy and light oil to smooth the action, but no dice. I'm likely going to try some emery paper or somesuch to add some clearance so the rotor turns more freely in the housing. With the climate where I live, I could just plug the inlet and play with the throttle until it warms up, but it would be nice to have this work. --- Dave Hall <dave@hallvw.clara.co.uk> wrote: > You will probably find the coils of the bi-metal > spring are clogged with oily > residues.
