That's exactly right (direct consequence of Conservation of Energy) and it also 
means that if the generator is faulty (and unable to put out electrical power) 
then it won't be hard to turn.

So we get back to the fact that the part providing the most mechanical load is 
still the one that's working.

BTW, this all applies to generator and alternators equally.
