I had this all figured out once years ago, when I had to work on my first '72. I'm not sure I will remember all of this still. This is one year ('72) only stuff. Of course one switch is for the backup lights. It closes when the MT is in R. The second switch on the nose is the same, but for 4th gear. It connects to a vacuum switch which enables the vacuum advance only in 4th gear. I generally just bypass the vacuum switch and connect the vacuum advance directly to the intake air distributor so that it's active at all times. As for the third switch, the one on the side, I THINK it closed when the tranny was in N, and I THINK it had something to do with the EGR. If I'm right, the wire for that would have come from the small silver box to the left of the engine that controlled the EGR. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
