It's a 13mm hex and an M10 x 1 thread. I use a tube wrench, just like the one that VW supplied for the lug bolts and spark plugs, except in 13mm. If you can't find one of those, you CAN slip under the cooling tin and get at it with an open end 13mm. That's laborious, but it works. The specialty tool makers like Snap-On and MATCO sell a special deep socket that is modified with a slot cut in the side for the wire to come out, but I find that my tube wrench actually works better, because it contains the wire inside it where it is almost completely protected.
