I called Brian Fye and he told me to get a cheap-o combination wrench and grind down the jaws. I did that on both ends and it was the 12-point end that actually allowed me to grab the nut and get it off. Now I have a 13mm thin combo wrench and I shouldn't have to worry about such a situation again (famous last words...).
