OK, so what do you think is wrong with the fan? If your fan is out of balance or bent, it could be rubbing against the housing and causing something like a knock.

Also, people often confuse the fan and the crank pulley, which looks a lot like a fan.

On your smoke, I'm always cautious when new symptoms appear in the middle of another problem. I check myself to be sure that the new thing isn't due to something I did to address the old thing. A simple compression test will tell you if you're losing oil into a cylinder.

You haven't mentioned any loss of power -- does it feel the same when driving it?

Next: are you sure the smoke is coming out of the pipe and not from around the exhaust?
