Okay, so this engine has been converted and is no longer FI. What make/model 
dist is this? Was it a 009?

I've never seen a dist with the advance weights worn like you describe, and 
I've taken a LOT of them apart.. I wonder if they just never got any 
lubrication from the factory.

If you can get an early FI distributor that would be a very good choice (good 
advance curve, good build quality) to go with your carbed engine. Just leave 
the vac advance disconnected.
