If your distributor shaft is good -- zero play -- then  I suspect that 
you don't have the distributor down quite tight to the case shoulder. 
When you over-revved it, the drive dog jumped its slot, then slid back 
in, but not before shaving some off your plug contacts and crushing your 
coil contact.

This can also happen if the coil contact breaks off, which happened to 
me once.
