Sure, either of these could lead to lumpy points, but I'm more inclined to
believe that the burrs and the metallic dust share a common cause. I know
the points mated cleanly a couple weeks ago when I poked around at it the
first time. I thought the burr might just be a pile of that silver dust
that got welded onto the contact point.

I detect no unusual play in the shaft. But tell me, what's the correct way
to check it? And finish that thought - if there is side play in the shaft,
that means the teeny metal shavings are coming from...?
Jim, thanks for the overhaul offer - love to take you up on it, but like you
said, that'd put me off the road for a while. And while the car might
appreciate the vacation, I simply couldn't get by without him for that long.
