'71 is a year by itself. But as far as I am concerned, it is one of the better years. I drive one myself as a daily driver, and it is Still automatic. Sorry to say, that switch is a year by itself. I would keep searching for a replacement. I have seen them listed, but a little expensive. If you can't find one, your best bet would be to go with a '72-'73. Then you are sharing parts with Type 1's, and a little more findable. As for the harness, I wouldn't replace the harness unless absolutely as a last resort. It is not an easy job. The T-3 harnesses are just about a custom made unit, and very expensive. -- Russ Wolfe '71 FB AT '66 FB MT '64 T34 (not running) '65 T1 (not running) '05 KIA Sorento SUV russw@classicvw.org http://www.classicvw.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
