Regardless of how the parts are held in there (loose acid, acid in a sponge, 
acid in a gell) the chemistry is still the same. The fact that they still have 
the same voltage per cell pretty much pins them down to being a lead-acid 
chemistry device. I don't think there is any way around that, but I'd be happy 
to be proven wrong.
