That kind of thing can clog an oil passage real quick. I normally use Permatex Aviation glue to seal case halfs, as it's the closest thing to what VW originally used when they built the engine. I do use RTV on the base of the cylinders instead of the paper gasket, as it seals better there, and the RTV will squeeze outward of the case. Just my take on it.
