That way, you can a) have a long handle to hold it with if it needs to go deep (think hemi heads) and b) that there's enough resistance to hold and turn it but not so much to overcome cross-threading it on an aluminum head. If you meet resistance on the hose and it's slipping over the insulator, you're either cross threaded or you've seated, and based on the number of turns, you should be able to tell which is which. Also, I was taught that spark plugs go in cold on an aluminum head, and that you put a little anti-seize on the threads (being careful not to get it on the electrodes.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
