Re: [T3] more brake curiosity

If the m/c doesn't hold fluid very long, first thing is to find out where it's
going. Is it leaking from the front end (reservoir hoses) or at the rear of the
chassis (probably rear m/c seal gone hard)? Also check the pipe by the
accelerator pedal - very common problem on left-hand drive apparently. Is
there evidence of fluid on the rear of the wheels?

There I was, camped in a field, and found half my brake fluid reservoir was
empty. What did I do? Tried to make the problem go away by filling up the
reservoir with most of my emergency bottle of fluid - mistake number 2, as the
level dropped again over the next few seconds! What was mistake number 1? To
ignore a small gradual drop over some months.
Looked underneath to see fluid dribbling from the joining hose from reservoir
tube to m/c - the hose end was split.

As this happened at the German Type3 Club meeting, someone had a piece of the
correct blue tube, so it was all secure again within a short time, and with the
last of the fluid and some careful transferring by tube from one side to the
other I got the tubes filled and driveable, then Mike Dempster, bless him,
returned form a Sunday morning garage search with a new bottle of fluid to
complete the job properly. No bleeding needed as no air had got in, which was
handy.

Lessons learned -
Don't ignore gradual changes in fluid level;
Don't make things worse by wasting valuable resources;
Check/replace the hoses every 30 years;
Have a bit of spare brake hose and fluid with you, and don't waste it.

BTW, you don't need rear discs in any normal use of the Type 3.
