When you try this, does the engine race, or bog down like it's seeing a load?

The 009 is not a good dist, but it should work "okay" here. Advance is not an 
issue for starting out. To check the advance, watch the timing marks with your 
timing light while you open the throttle. Or, grab the rotor and twist it CW. 
It should move ~1/2" and then snap back smartly when you release it. If it 
doesn't do this, then the advance isn't working. 

The stock FI dist is excellent and has both vacuum and mech advances.

When you installed the carbs, did you plumb in a place to connect the AT vacuum 
modulator? You need to.
