It's important to understand that the type # is quite often different from the 
first 3 digits of the VIN. This is probably a type 361 (Variant without 
sunroof) with a VIN that starts out 363 ('73 Variant.)

The fact that VW made these numbers so similar serves as a continual source of 
confusion to all of us.

Personally, I think they should have just made the VIN one digit longer and 
incorporated all the info into it. This way your VIN would start out 3613... 
('73 Variant without sunroof) and there would be no confusion.
