The combination of smoke from the dash and the dash lights going out sounds like an electrical short somewhere under the dash. You may have burned up the headlight switch. The same thing happened to me in a bus and I found two wires who's insulation had completely burned off. I think something had been rewired improperly and bypassed the fuze. This can be a problem in old cars, especially old economy cars with multiple owners that have done repairs as cheap as possible. I would look for a burned fuse. If you find one trace its path on the wiring schematic and look for any bad wires or connections under the dash. You may have to test the parts themselves. Make sure nothing other than fuses are being used for fuses. Unforunately it'll be harder to work under the type 3 dash than it was on the bus.
