Re: type3-d Digest V2005 #54

A bum rod bearing will only last a couple weeks... bad mains will last
several thousand miles... but with EATHER one thing that will tell you FOR
SURE is that when a pressure fed bearing is bad, it will rattle/knock MUCH
worse when you first start the car... the a couple seconds later when the
oil pressure comes up the noise will go away or get much quieter. Usually,
youll hear bearing noise on startup long before you hear them hot. Bearing
noise is a deep knock... not rattle, sounds like a fan housing issue from
what your saying here.. perhaps a loose housing bolt or damage from the
accident. as you stated

Yes indeed! a properly calibrated gauge will tell you alot about the
condition of your engine. You want a 100psi gauge with a 270 degree sweep,
so you can get accurate readings in the 10-40lb range.
