I like the way my heater smells, a lot actually. It's along the same lines as the smell
that old vacuum tube audio equipment gives off, as it is heating decades of accumulated
daily reside. The VW smell is unique [I think], but quite enjoyable all the same. 

Perhaps placing a bag with some stale baked goods [like cinnamon raisin bagels or some
other pleasant smelling thing] behind the seats where it will get hit with heat will
counter the smell of rodentia as it washes out. Then again, if the little critters are
still alive you'd just be encouraging a longer stay. ;)
