Man, to quote some famous guy named Bill, "I feel your pain"
I had a similar experience with a local shop. They charged me $300+ to
fix
my wife's Cabrio's oil leak ...and it still leaks. I now know it's a $5
O-ring seal in the oil cooler - which they didn't replace.
Back in 1993 when I originally bought my 412 wagon it had a really bad
hesitation problem. Took it to a very reputable shop in Pontiac/MI
because they were part of the Michigan VW club and everything seemed
fine. But in the end they also ran up a ridiculous bill of several
hundred $$ without finding or fixing a thing. I "liberated" the car and
took it to a real old-timer in Midland/MI where I lived at the time.
Guess what, he found a *kinked fuel line* underneath the gas tank...
Interestingly, the shop in Pontiac fell out with the club not long
thereafter. They tried to abuse the club for their commercial purposes
if I remember correctly.
