[T3] Backfire, no start

<x-flowed>I went out to start Wilson this weekend. It usually takes a number of cranks to get the gasoline back there until it starts, and after about five or six seconds of cranking it sounded like it caught, then it backfired. After that it wouldn't crank again. If I turn the pulley by hand, it moves fine so everything internally seems OK. Connections on the starter seem fine as well. The generator & oil lights come on when I turn the key... Just no cranking. Any ideas where to start? It's been wet & my car is in the driveway so I haven't had a chance to really get under there & see what's up. Could I have ruined the starter?
