<x-flowed>As to the 914, the air intake is in front of the engine and the exhaust system is under and stretched behind the engine...big difference compared to a 411/412 set up. The 914 can get its air from above via the engine cover or, primarily, from below the car. Later models have two flaps under the body, before the engine bay, that assist in delivering air to the engine bay.

I'm not a Bus expert but I believe the exhaust system is sealed from the engine compartment by engine tin. Cool air fills the engine bay via side air ducts.
