Yes, the "division of labor" of those 2 knobs changed when they introduced the large central airbox in '71. > I think the greater tragedy/or more likely problem(as it happened to me) is > that the metal tube that the plastic/rubber drain tube goes into, rusts out. > It's pretty hard to replace that thing. Yours is the only case I've heard of where that happened. I agree that this sounds quite hard to fix. I'm not sure what I would try to do. One possibility would be to make completely new holes for the tubes: Move them further down and outboard so that they come out below the gas tank. Then you might just be able to cut horizontal slots which you could stretch with a large punch into openings that the hoses could push completely thru. You'd have to look at the car carefully to make sure that you cleared the gas tank, the center hump, and the gas pedal, and, of course, you'd need longer hoses. I have clear plastic hose material if you're interested. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
