As an SDC member these past ten years or so, I can say with some 
authority (based on the club's extensive historical documentation, 
covered well in what is probably the best monthly car-club publication 
in the world) that the business started with wheelbarrows and soon 
graduated to wagons.

It's really a shame that the VW community does not have the sort of 
central source that the SDC represents. It would do a lot to alleviate 
the sort of history-by-rumor/marketing/anecdote that we encounter so often.
