I decided to go a different route on my 65 too. I used the later (68 on)
style column head and lock assembly (actually I used an entire steering column).
It's a very easy conversion, and it allows you to use more commonly found
replacement parts. On mine, I had to seperate the lock nut plate into 2 parts
(because the later style is slightly wider than the earlier style (about 10mm
difference)), and I used the 65 tube in place of the later style since it's a
little longer. The wiring was a matter of matching the colors, and it's done.
Basically it's a plug and play replacement. I know this isn't factory correct, but
it does work, and it uses VW parts. I hope this helps.
