Ask them for a furnace thermocouple. Get the longest they have. It is a long copper tube, about 1/8" diameter, with a bulb on one end and nut on the other. The longest is usually 36". Cut a piece of the of the 1/8" tubing about 1/2-3/4" longer than the inside diameter of the muffler where the big nut screws in. Not put mating angles on the ends of the copper so the to ends can over lap, but be the same diameter as the original tube. Use a file, or a grinder, or a dremel tool to make the angles. Keep fitting until they just fit snug into the hole. Now, put the nuts back into the heater boxes, and tighten them down. You won't be able to tighten completely until the muffler is back on the engine and then check them again after the engine has been warmed up completely a couple times. -- Russ Wolfe '71 FB AT '66 FB MT '64 T34 (not running) '65 T1 (not running) russw@classicvw.org http://www.classicvw.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
