Hi All, I'm new to this group, but not new to Type 3's or VW's in general. Back in the 70's I probly rebuilt 20-30 VW's and bathtub Porsches. Was an obsession with me for a while. The biggest project I undertook, VW wise, was a squareback. I started with a 64 frame. Put disks all the way around on it. Built up a Corvair 140 hp engine and VW tranny. Put a 67 body I found on it, that was in perfect condition. The car ran like a 911 Porsche, and in fact would usually walk away from 911's up in the San Bernadino mountains. I had all kinds of handling improvements on it too. DB&HVW's did an article on the car in '76 I think. Kept it for two years, til some jerk ran a red light and took the front end off. I was heartbroken. I had so much work in it, I just sold it. It was a kick, though. Now, to my question. My 16 year old son has decided he wants a Squareback. We found one for sale in nice condition, except the motor has 200,000 original miles on it. It's running not well at all. The guy says the fuel injection is not working properly and that it's the "brain". I never worked on a VW EFI even once, and am wondering if these units can be rebuilt? I know the early type 3's had carbs, but can you still get them? My son is not interested in performance, he just wants a good running car and he likes the old look. I can rebuild the motor etc., no problem, but any advice about what to do about the EFI setup would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jim Showker ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
