Both times I've fitted a new belt to a Type 3 in the past 30 years I've taken
the pulley apart, having already learned that way on a Beetle.  You need to keep
the pulley turning gradually as you finger tighten the nut, but it can be done.
Having seen it done by releasing the generator strap, I can understand mechanics
prefer that way as there's less chance of losing bits into the fan housing.
