The .004 valve adjustment ended with the 36hp and started again in '65 on the 40hp. They didn't change the adjustment to .006 until I think it was '68.

That change of valve adjustment had a slightly different reason.

On heads that have the .004" adjustment the valve clearance grows slightly as the engine warms up. On those with the .006" adjustment it was the other way around, it actually shrank. That scheme must have caused more problems than before, so the old configuration was reintroduced after a very short time.
