When they get a hole, you tend to get ignition of slightly rich exhaust gases in
the box.  I'm close to changing over my silencer (muffler) and while stuffing
some exhaust putty into the small holes as it was idling, there were numerous
little flashes and phuts noticeable - that's while the auto-choke was still
giving a rich mixture.  Otherwise it only happens after accelerating hard, on
changing to the next gear - like a turbo on a rally car.  I guess you get full
throttle enrichment on an FI car too.
