Here is a photo of the progress made thus far. I wish I had a photo of
the way it looked when it was extricated from the housing the first
time.
This morning I visited the bug and bunny shop to get advice on this
troublesome part. The mechanic, a man who was working as a foreman of
a VW Dealer service department when this car was first arrived on the
market, disabled the switch and told me not to bother with it further.
(He is not fond of squarebacks!) Knowing I didn't need it anymore, I
got very aggressive in getting the metal piece out of the housing.
Tugging and twisting, the mangled piece and the spring finally came
free. Once the pieces were out I cold finally get all the blue goo out.
I flattened and straightened and even annealed the metal to soften
the brittle piece. I hammered and bent the metal part and got the
shape just right. I got it back into place with the spring. I didn't
lose anything or break anything. The car started right up in neutral
four times! I was very please with myself. An hour later the car
wouldn't start!
The spring doesn't apply pressure evenly to the top and bottom
contacts. if the piece is too wide, it the spring isn't strong enough
to push the piece into the contact. If it is too narrow it comes out
too far and catches on the contacts and gets bent out of shape.
There is not much room to work with the part in place and taking it out
re-mangles the part. Is there any more advice. I am pleased with my
progress and can't give up now.
Thanks,
Josephine
